Folic acid, or vitamin B9, is a water-soluble B-group vitamin. It affects and controls the metabolic synthesis processes and the formation of new healthy cells in our body. The nutrient is also important for a strong heart.

Our body gets folic acid from food, but less than half of the folic acid originally in food reaches our tissues. This is because some of the folic acid in food is destroyed during culinary processing before we start eating. Folic acid is very sensitive to light and heat, decomposes easily and is destroyed in food.

Pregnancy doubles the mother’s need for folic acid and folic acid is especially important for fetal development. The Health Board recommends that all women who plan to become pregnant take 400 micrograms daily from conception until the 12th week of pregnancy.

Folic acid requirements are higher than usual even if you have an acute illness; do hard physical work or have an irregular lifestyle.

The best sources of folic acid are green vegetables such as spinach, lettuce and parsley. High in folic acid are nettle leaves, legumes, peppers, all fruits, berries and citrus fruits. They should be eaten as unprocessed as possible in order to preserve the folic acid in the food.

Folic acid contributes to normal homocysteine metabolism which is a compound implicated in the build up of plaques within blood vessel walls. Folic acid is therefore an important nutrient in all adults’ diets, not just in pregnancy, which is one good reason to eat plenty of green leafy vegetables, a rich source of this important nutrient.

Folic acid also contributes to the normal function of the immune system and to the reduction of tiredness and fatigue.
